I filed for public office because of my strong belief in giving back to the community. Serving as a school board trustee is about caring and providing educational opportunities for all students. The children are our future and our common goal has to be centered on the success of our students. I want to see students graduate and go on to become productive citizens in our society.
AISD faces many challenges, but it also has many opportunities to provide the best educational system in the country for our children. It is a continuous challenge to meet state testing requirements and mandates on a restricted budget; but I believe that once I gain a better understanding of the day-to-day operations of the district, given my background and commitment, I would truly make a positive impact in our community as a trustee.
Jerry Garcia is a candidate for the open contested seat in District 3 of the Austin Independent School District Board of Trustees. The election is held on Saturday, May 10, 2008.
